XSTIM Phones Configuration Checklist

The following is a checklist for configuration within the entire customer network in order to support the use of E-MetroTel's XSTIM Phones.

Prerequisites

Prior to starting the configuration, make sure you have the following details:

  1. UCX private IP Address (typically the default value of 192.168.1.200). This can be found in the UCX System / Network Parameters settings.
  2. The Port number intended to be used for XSTIM signaling internally and externally between the UCX and the XSTIM devices. (The UCX default value is 7000, but existing legacy deployments may use other values such as 5000.)
  3. The public IP Address that remote devices will be required to use to access the UCX.
    • If you do not have this information, check with the company network administrator.
    • If you are inside the company LAN, you may be able to determine the public IPv4 address from the whatsmyip.org  website.
    • You may also determine this address by temporarily changing the IP Configuration setting to Static IP setting within the SIP Settings on the UCX and then click the Auto Configuration button.. After  Be sure to exit the SIP Settings page without clicking the Submit button.

Bind Port

  1. The Bind port is the port used for XSTIM signaling. Signaling must reach the UCX on the port programmed here. This value should be used in the LAN Settings S1 Port or S2 Port on the XSTIM / Unistim phones. It should also be used when configuring port mapping on the corporate firewall. In most cases, it will be the same value used for S1 Port and S2 Port settings on remote phones as well.

Public IP

  1. The Public IP (see Prerequisites) must be configured here in order to use XSTIM Phones outside the customer network.

On the Corporate Firewall

Port Mapping

  1. It is necessary to make sure that XSTIM signaling traffic arriving at the Corporate Firewall is able to be redirected to the UCX on the correct port. In general Port Forwarding requires a mapping of a port and traffic type used on incoming traffic (from the internet) to a combination of an internal IP Address and Port inside the corporate LAN. In this case, if default values are used, a Port Mapping rule that maps external traffic on UDP port 7000 to the UCX Server address of 192.168.1.200 and Port 7000 is required.
  2. The media (voice) RTP packets also require port mapping to be able to communicate between external telephones and the UCX. By default the UCX uses UDP ports 10,000 to 13,999. Using default values, a Port Mapping rule that maps external traffic on UDP ports 10,000 to 13,999 to the UCX Server address of 192.168.1.200 and Ports 10,000 to 13,999 is required.

On XSTIM telephones

  1. On internally connected XSTIM extensions, the S1 or S2 setting of the phone should be configured as the internal UCX address default 192.168.1.200), and the S1 Port and S2 Port settings  should be configured as the incoming Port number used in the Port Mapping rule #1 above.
