UCx1000 Hard Drive Replacement Guide

It is recommended that you always use a static mat and static strap while working on components in the interior of the system.

To ensure proper operation and cooling, all bays in the system must be populated at all times with either a module or with a blank.

Step One: Getting the UCx1000 ready

  1. If installed, remove the front bezel.
  2. Using the UCx Web Configuration Utility, prepare the hard drive for removal by shutting down the UCx system. See Shutdown or Reboot.
If the hard drive is online, the green activity/fault indicator flashes as the drive is turned off. You can remove the hard-drive when the hard-drive indicators turn off.
Removing the front bezel
  1. Unlock the bezel.
  2. Lift the release latch next to the lock.
  3. Rotate the left end of the bezel away from the front panel.
  4. Unhook the right end of the bezel and pull the bezel away from the system.

Step Two: Replacing the Hard Drives

When installing the hard drives, ensure that the adjacent drives are fully installed. Inserting a hard-drive carrier and attempting to lock its handle next to a partially installed carrier can damage the partially installed carrier's shield spring and make it unusable.

If you are replacing the existing pair of hard drives with two new hard drives running a different software load, make sure both hard drives are removed from the system. Otherwise, if only one hard drive is removed, the system will automatically rebuild using the existing drive and any data on the new replacement hard drive will be lost when the system is powered on.

Remove hard-drive carrier

  1. Press the release button to open the hard-drive carrier release handle.
  2. Slide the hard-drive carrier out of the hard-drive slot.
  3. Repeat the above steps to remove both hard-drive carriers that contain the existing hard drives.

Remove hard drive from carrier

  1. Using a #2 Philips screwdriver, remove the screws from the slide rails on the hard-drive carrier.
  2. Lift the hard drive out of the hard-drive carrier.
  3. Repeat the above steps to remove both the existing hard drives from their carriers.

Install new hard drive into carrier

  1. Insert the new hard drive into the hard-drive carrier with the connector end of the hard drive toward the back of the hard-drive carrier.
  2. Align the screw holes on the hard drive with the screw holes on the hard-drive carrier. When aligned correctly, the back of the hard drive is flush with the back of the hard-drive carrier.
  3. Attach the screws to secure the hard drive to the hard-drive carrier.
  4. Repeat the above steps to install both new hard drives into their carriers.

Install hard-drive carrier

  1. Insert the hard-drive carrier into the hard-drive slot until the carrier connects with the backplane.
  2. Close the hard-drive carrier handle to lock the hard drive in place.

Install only one of the hard-drive carriers into the UCx1000, install the second hard-drive carrier after Step Three.

Install hard-drive blank

For the second hard-drive, insert a hard-drive blank into the hard-drive slot and push the hard-drive blank until the release button clicks into place.

Step Three: Importing Foreign RAID configuration

You have a very small window to press the required keys, make sure you read all the instructions in this section first before proceeding. You need to be ready to press the required key as soon as you see the displayed messages.

  1. Connect a monitor to the UCx1000 and power up the UCx1000 system.
  2. On the monitor screen, when you see the following messages, press the "f" or "F" key (case insensitive).
    Foreign configuration(s) found on adaptor
Press any key to continue or ‘C’ to load the configuration utility, or ‘F’ to import foreign configuration(s) and continue.
  3. After pressing the "F" key, you will see the following messages on the screen:
All of the disks from your previous configuration are gone. If this is an unexpected message, then please power off your system and check your cables to ensure all disks are present.
Press any key to continue, or ‘C’ to load the configuration utility.
  4. Press the <space> key to continue, you will see the following messages:
0 Non-RAID Disk(s) found on the host adapter
    0 Non-RAID Disk(s) handled by BIOS
1 Virtual Drive(s) found on the host adapter.
    1 Virtual Drive(s) Degraded
1 Virtual Drive(s) handled by BIOS
  5. Once the configuration import is complete, the E-MetroTel boot screen will be displayed.
  6. The Boot screen will display the OS loaded on the new hard drive, system will startup without any further key input.
  7. Disconnect monitor from the UCx1000.
  8. You can now proceed to configure your UCx1000 using the Web-Based Configuration Utility.

Step Four: Installing the Second Hard-Drive carrier

Once you have confirmed that the system is operational running the new software load, you can proceed to install the second hard drive.

  1. Press the release button and slide the blank out of the hard-drive slot.
  2. Insert the hard-drive carrier (with the new hard drive) into the hard-drive slot until the carrier connects with the backplane.
  3. Close the hard-drive carrier handle to lock the hard drive in place.
  4. Install the front bezel if applicable.
  5. Data on the first hard drive will be automatically synchronized to the second hard drive.
